If you’re like me, you are constantly reading magazines, watching videos and playing with interior design ideas. Believe it or not, one question I get asked a lot is what color should I paint the walls in my house?
While color choice is a personal and it may be fun to paint every room in the house a different color, it’s a good idea to play it safer on wall color for several reasons.
First, you may be thinking of selling your house and it’s a wise move to paint the entire home one color. cream, white, beige, taupe or grey are always good color choices as they will go with the interior and furniture of most new home owners planning to buy. It is restful and gives the buyer a chance to visualize the room and it also makes the interior look bigger. Something to think about if the rooms in your house are small.
However, if you’re living in the house, you may get tired of the “transitional” look and want to add a pop of color. I personally love a pop of color in a dining room. There are many great choices from silver and bronze to various hues of blue, green and red. Those colors are timeless and classic and can be formal or casual depending on your space. I like to change out the colors in my dining room most often to give the house a fresh look and choose a painting that I love as the focal point that can be seen from the living room or main entrance and pic one of the colors in the painting to put on the wall.
Color determines the mood and feel of the home. From transitional and classic to modern and edgy. With that said, the other place I love to put a pop of color in is the main wall in a bedroom that you see when you walk into a room. I’m referring to the wall that the headboard rests. I am transitioning all of the bedrooms to a taupe by Sherwin Williams that’s not too pink, green or orange. It looks great day or night and with the change of seasons when the greens from the outside reflect back into the home. I’ve been testing it out over time and all art looks good on it.
I usually pick one wall to use a pop of color. In one bedroom I have a great start to a Moroccan theme with a light blue-grey paint on the back wall.
In another bedroom I’m using a spa blue-green; and another room has a chocolate brown feature wall. Those rooms are on separate floors. I also like to make sure rooms flow together so it’s not like a psychedelic trip from one room to the next.
Next on my list will work great with some modern art I’m currently painting. I’m going for a more modern theme in my home and plan to change out the back wall in one of the room to a bright pink plum.
I have to say, though after renovating two houses, being a former antique dealer and selling art, my all-time favorite wall color is yellow. Almost any painting made will look good on that color.
The advantage of painting only one room in a home is that you don’t have to buy a whole gallon to do the job and you can change the colors out more often to have a new look. Paint and artwork are what make a room and are two of the least expensive ways to have a whole new look without buying all new furniture.
